Bird of Paradise Stud Earrings

In Fiji, the options for custom jewellery pieces are quite limited. That's when Finn decided to explore Nelson, where he had family in New Zealand. While searching online for a special gift for his partner, he stumbled upon our website.

Finn wanted to transform his partner’s deep affection for Bird of Paradise flowers into a pair of exquisite gold earrings. He provided us with an image of his partner’s tattoo, featuring the flower stem, as a design reference. Having created several floral designs before, I felt confident in honouring the beauty of this design. I envisioned enhancing the piece with a contrast of yellow gold for the bloom and white gold for the stem, and Finn agreed.

I began by scaling down the tattoo image and carving the flower head in wax. I made it thick enough to split down the middle, creating a mirror image of the design. It was a challenging task, especially when crafting the spikes; I had to ensure they were not too sharp for comfortable wear.

Once the flower head was cast in yellow gold, I filed and shaped some thick white gold wire to form the stem. Finally, I soldered the head to the stem and attached posts to transform the flowers into wearable ear studs. The final result was a stunning statement piece.

A family member picked up the earrings just in time for their trip to Fiji, bringing this special creation to Finn's partner as a heartfelt gift.

A few weeks after the earrings were collected, we reached out to Finn to check if they had arrived safely. In response, we received this stunning photo of Hannah wearing the earrings in her tropical paradise home of Fiji. Along with the photo, Finn shared these kind words with us.
